The Basic Techniques of Capoeira
Rather than focusing on injuring an opponent, Capoeira emphasises the use of skill instead. Capoeristas (Capoeira players) will often perform a move without fully completing it. This shows their superiority in the roda. There is no need for a capoerista to use a fast attack if their opponent is having difficultly evading a slow attack. Whenever their opponent attacks, players get an opportunity practise an evasive technique.
Styles of Capoeira
Overall there are two main classifications of Capoeira: traditional and modern. Angola is the eldest which is often referred to as the traditional form. With roots in African traditions, Capoeira Angola is estimated to be over 500 years old. The more modern forms are usually referred to as either regional or contemporanea.
Women in Capoeira
Let’s face it: women and men are different. And in some parts of the world, they are hardly equal. Even within the realm of capoeira– the great equalizer where people from different walks of life unite under a common practice– the relationship between the sexes is still a reflection of society at large, a microcosm of the greater patriarchy.
